BIZRECYCLING GRANTS SAVE BUSINESSES MONEY E veryone knows it’s good for the environment to divert materials from landfills that can be reused again or composted – and many of us recycle at home. But did you know that in 2016, the state of Minnesota mandated that all public entities, commercial buildings and sports facilities recycle at least three types of materials–such as paper, plastic, glass, metal and/or organics? BizRecycling experts will conduct a free audit of your waste streams and suggest methods to improve your process or begin to capture valuable resources and divert them from your trash bins. Experts provide confidential assessments/recommendations and help guide your business through the process, including applying for grants, ordering labels, placing bins and training your staff. Grants of up to $10,000 are available to help companies start or improve their recycling program. IPS CRANES IPS Cranes manufactures new locomotive cranes, rebuilds and repairs existing locomotive and crawler cranes, and supplies replacement parts for cranes. The company contacted BizRecycling for help improving recycling efforts at their corporate office and distribution warehouse in Vadnais Heights. was ending up in the trash. The recycling experts helped connect IPS Cranes with a local company, Merrick Inc., which recycles plastic film. The recycling experts also helped IPS Cranes apply for a BizRecycling Grant. The grant was used to purchase recycling bins for each employee’s desk. They also bought a recycling station for the staff break room, and stocked the break room with reusable silverware and dishes. To ensure a successful recycling program, IPS Cranes distributed a recycling plan to each employee with information on what could be recycled and tips for reducing office waste. GO GREEN Since 2014, BizRecycling has awarded more than 830 grants to businesses in Ramsey and Washington Counties. In 2020, BizRecycling is expanding service to apartments, townhomes and condo buildings with five or more units. IPS Cranes now collects nearly 3,000 pounds of recyclables a year, including about 360 pounds of plastic film. As recycling has increased, the trash volume has decreased. With less-frequent trash pickups, they are saving $150 a month on their trash bill. By switching to reusable dishes in their breakroom, they are also saving $50 per month in purchasing costs. The company is so pleased with their recycling success that they encourage their customers and vendors to connect with BizRecycling. Recycling has truly become a part of the company culture at IPS Cranes. Although they had a single-sort recycling program in place, they felt they could recycle better. IPS Cranes also wanted to reduce waste at the source by moving away from disposable dishes and cutlery.
