them. If you delay in scheduling the fol- low up, then it becomes another item on your plate. If you are hiring third party companies to handle some of your items, then get them signed on and going as quickly as possible. Keep in mind that some delegation can be automated. For example, if ordering office supplies is constantly on your list, then you can automate ordering through your vendor. If personal items like grocery shopping and household chores take up a spot on your plate, automate them. Some of our clients have found the greatest relief after setting up their Amazon Subscribe and Save list and booking their lawn care company. STEP Tackle. 3 Now that you have freed up your plate a bit, tackle the urgent items. Pick one time per week to focus on the Me Only Immediate bucket. It may be a lunch hour or evening that you dedicate to the bucket, but pick a time and schedule it on all of your calendars (including your practice calendar). Ini- tially as you work through items, you may need a few hours to deal with these urgent tasks. As you shrink your task list, you should be able to reduce your time. After reducing your Me Only Immediate bucket, turn your attention to your Me Only Later bucket. Continue to keep your weekly appointed time as you begin working through the items in this bucket, as well as any new items you add along the way to the Me Only Immediate bucket. STEP three months or less. Mid-term is any- thing that you would like to accomplish in one year. Long-term is anything that you would like to accomplish in the dis- tant (over a year) future. Anytime you attend a course or read a book and come away with some ideas, return to your goal list and categorize the idea into either your short-term, mid-term, or long-term goal list. One time per month, treat yourself to a little alone time where you can make some headway on your goals. Make sure that you put this event on all of your calendars and do not replace it with anything else. Hold the time as sacred. You are walking away from a convention with so many ideas, but your plate already feels so full. It is easy to suffer from IDKWTD. However, now you have a plan. Now you know what to do. Buckets. Delegate. Tackle. Dream! Bethany Petty is a practice management consultant that breaks the mold. In an effort to remove herself from the abrasive consultant per- sona, Bethany spent time receiving Masters degrees in Adult Educa- tion and in Health Communication, which enables her to present information in a way that dentists and team members understand and appreciate. Her unique approach customizes her suggestions and training to fit the personality and goals of the practice. Rather than approaching each practice with the same “Fix-It Guide,” she evalu- ates the practice, talks with team members, and listens to the dentist before making any suggestions. Bethany has a legacy of dental pro- fessionals in her family, and she has had the privilege of helping her father to build, manage, and maintain a successful family practice. With the heart to serve den- tists, she has made a difference in practices all over the DFW Metroplex. For more information, visit www.hellobethany.com.
