Making It Meaningful
by Misti Sisk , RDA
Other moms and I set out to make our community aware of Misty ’ s increasingly desperate need for a kidney and we prayed for a donor for several months .
Misti and Misty share the bond of a lifetime .
M y name is Misti Sisk . For the past 26 years , I have been blessed with the greatest job as a dental assistant and have worked alongside Dr . Kyle Keeter in Dallas since 2003 .
My husband and I moved to Royse City in 2007 with our two daughters , Madison and Kennedy , to enjoy wide open spaces and a slower pace of life . We enjoy the beautiful sunrises , campfires at night , small town community , and chasing our girls from one activity to another .
Like most parents , our closest relationships started to develop when we met the parents of our children ’ s friends . When my oldest daughter Madison started high school , she became friends with a girl named Kaylie Torres . Through Kaylie , I met her mom , Misty Torres .
Misty and her husband Martin had lived in Royse City most of their lives and everybody knew them . As we got to know them better , I learned about Misty ’ s health struggle . Her kidneys began to fail at age 27 while expecting her second child and now , at 40 , she was in need of a transplant . She had been able to manage so far without dialysis , but her condition was getting worse and her doctors recommended she begin at home dialysis eight hours each night .
This frightening scenario was familiar to me since my mother was a seven-year dialysis patient and received a life-saving kidney transplant in 2010 . I knew this was no life for a mother to endure or for a husband and children to be subjected to .
One night while I was driving home , it became very clear when the words to a song on the radio stood out to me . I was waiting for someone else to do what God had called me to do myself . I was the very person we had been praying for . My life , my body , my health is not my own . It is an undeserved gift from God . I am not entitled to have a better , easier , healthier lifestyle than Misty or anyone else .
The Sisk family
“ Life here on earth is short . I want mine to have meaning and purpose .”
I began the testing process to see if we were a match without even telling her . On Christmas Day 2014 , my family and I let Misty and her family know that I was both willing and able to give her the gift of life by donating my kidney to her .
Today , Misty and I are both doing great ! After the transplant , she was transformed from a tired , unhealthy woman into an active , energetic mother and wife her family had never seen . As for me , the way I feel physically is unchanged – most days , I forget the transplant even happened .
Life here on earth is temporary and short , and I want mine to have meaning and purpose . Donating life is a small sacrifice with immeasurable benefit .
