lack current knowledge and skills , training or even retraining , is the answer .
Ask the right questions . Part of coaching involves staff members discovering their own skills and abilities . As issues arise , resist the temptation to resolve them yourself . Individuals grow by learning how to overcome obstacles themselves . Staff members feel a greater sense of achievement knowing they ’ ve reached a goal through their individual effort . Coach them to solve their own problems !
Look for obstacles to performance . Coaching your staff can resolve many performance issues , but not all of them . Some problems require different solutions . Are factors beyond staff control getting in the way – things like equipment failure , poor scheduling , understaffing or conflicting instructions ? Remove outside obstacles that hurt performance , then get on to the coaching !
In the rush of daily life , a team sometimes loses sight of the ultimate objective in a dental practice ; profitability and patient satisfaction . As coach , you can keep people focused both on the individual steps they ’ re taking and those larger goals .
Listen and be present . Great coaches listen . They learn to shut out ordinary distractions and to be present with the team members they ’ re coaching . They also understand the value of not monopolizing a conversation .
Ask for feedback . Your own coaching skills will benefit from feedback you receive from the team members you ’ re coaching and those they work with . Look for areas where you can improve your own skills and become an even more effective coach and manager . You too may need to make some changes in your transition from Dentist to Coach !
