CORE MARKETING STRATEGIES

by Haylee Davis

Marketing , the delicate art

of creating , communicating and delivering a business ’ s product or service to its desired consumer , is critical to the health and wellbeing of any business . Modern day dentistry is , of course , no exception . Even so , the art of marketing the dental practice can feel elusive and , in some cases , overwhelming and confusing . But it doesn ’ t have to . This article will concentrate on the 5 core marketing strategies that have been found to be nearly always golden while also looking back at the evolution of dental marketing .
A look back in time …
Often , an evaluation of the present is not complete without a few glances at the past . This is especially so in a discussion about marketing the dental practice . Communication to patients about dentistry or dental practices has morphed and evolved so much over time , particularly over the past thirty to fifty years , that it is easy to lose sight of the true “ what and why ” of dental marketing .
Ancient history and the first public mentions of dentistry
The first known communication about dentistry was in 5,000 BC by the Sumerians . In these ancient writings , “ tooth worms ” are referenced as the possible cause for what we now know as dental decay caused by sugar and other factors . Fun fact : The “ tooth worm ” theory wasn ’ t abandoned until the 17th and 18th centuries when Pierre Fauchard , the father of modern dentistry , proved that sugar is the likely culprit and that treating a decaying tooth is possible .
Hesy-Re is another early public mention of dentistry . This ancient Egyptian is the first recorded human to be called “ dentist .” Or , more specifically , “ Great One of the ivory cutters .”
Dentistry , clearly , has been a human need for thousands of years , and communication about this trade dates back many centuries !
