SPRING:
You will find that midges are everywhere in
late February through May. Skwalas will start
in late March through the first few weeks of
April. You will also see quite a few nemoura
stoneflies, as well, from late February to the first
of April. March browns will start in mid to late
March and go through most of April. Blue wing
olives are around and prevalent from March
throughout May. There are a few gray drakes
around in mid-April mixed in too. We do very
well streamer fishing the Joe during the spring in
addition to nymphing.
SUMMER:
By late June the river clears up and calms
down. During summer, we can expect to see;
green drakes, golden stones, pmd’s, yellow
sallies, flying carpenter ants, caddis, tricos,
grasshoppers, beetles, and flavs. From late
June to August, overcast days will provide
stellar blue wing olive hatches. There is also
a small number of salmon flies to be found
in early June, but not enough to really get
excited about. A larger orange stimulator
is a killer pattern early and throughout the
summer. The pmds and caddis are going to
be the core daily hatches throughout July
and September. Emerger patterns like soft
hackles and CDC emergers are important
patterns to have with you, the fish cannot
resist them.
