of flies like October caddis seem to cause the
“troutiness” of these fish to return, and they
remember what it was like to smash a caddis
in their smolt days. Additionally, I believe that
steelhead are inherently curious and bite out
for that very reason. With both skaters and
muddlers in mind, anytime you have the flat light
of early morning, evening or substantial cloud
cover, it’s prime time to use this steelhead tactic.
Just below the surface is the realm of hair wings
and the ornately Atlantic salmon inspired flies.
Running full float, intermediate, or sinking poly
leaders will allow you to work the top foot of the
flow to find success.
