A good fly for this would be TFP Corn Snake.
There are others, but this should give you
an idea as to what I’m using. Plus, stop by
the shop and we’ll over load your brain with
a lot more patterns.
Another effective style to fish there is to
use a strike indicator. Most of the general
nymphs will work. Also, balanced leeches
are a real plus for this style of fishing on
Rufus Woods. The ones I would recommend
would be the TFP Balanced Leech in olive/
chart and the TFP Balanced Squirrel Leach
in black. Another effective pattern to use ,
while nymphing, is using a crayfish pattern.
This pattern is more of a summer and fall
style, but it has been known to produce
reactions later than that.
No matter which style you choose, don’t be
afraid to switch flies and presentation. Also,
don’t hesitate to try something different or
like I say, “out of the box”.
The rod size I use is a 5wt to 6wt or even a
7wt for my spey/switch rods. Single hand
rods are just about the same except I will go
on up to an 8wt for the heavier streamers.
Depending on where you are fishing,
you will either need a Washington State
fishing license or a non-member Colville
Confederate Tribes license. You can get
both types of licenses here at the Omak
North 40 Fly Shop.
I highly recommend Rufus Woods for
something new and a chance to hook into
some large trout, whether or not we have a
steelhead season.
