The rivers are full and we have received full run-off this year. This may have delayed fishing plans for this year but it is going to be a much better fishery throughout the summer in many of our area waters we have seen at dangerously hot and low levels in years past. The full run-off is good for insects and fish, which is mostly what we are concerned with here (although I sympathize with flooded basements). June is the month when we see great Salmonfly, Golden Stones, and caddis hatches on the rivers and is the most fun time to throw big dry flies (if you haven’t seen “The Hatch” we have it in the shop and it will get you very amped for the Salmonfly hatch which has started in many places already). For a change of pace, carp on the fly is getting increasingly popular. If you haven’t had a use for your 8 weight since your last Pike or saltwater trip then Carp can give you a reason to use it. They can be very tricky to hook on the fly, but once you do, you will become addicted. The Pike situation should be heating up with a slow start this year due to our extended winter and the lakes and reservoirs taking longer to warm up than normal. However now is the time to try for big pike. The larger Pike move in to the shallows when the water begins to warm. Flies with lots of movement and tied with craft fur, rabbit strips, and other such fibers drive them to strike. We are fully staffed in the shop this year with some really sharp fly fishers/ fly tiers. Come by with any questions and we can help you out. Where We Expect to See You On June 7th the Missouri River Fly Fishers will be hosting the Kid’s Fly Fishing Day at Wadsworth Pond here in Great Falls. Aside from actually going fishing, local fly tiers and fishermen will be present to answer questions and have fly tying demonstrations. New this year will be a showcase of different types of flies so that kids can see that there is a lot more our there than fly fishing for trout. Local tiers have come together to show off their favorite saltwater, Pike, Bass, and other types of flies as well. Prewitt Creek Fly Shop will be having their 2nd annual “Anglers & Boating Swap Meet” on June 28th from 9AM to 3PM. This event will include booths, fly tying and casting demos, and more. The event is also sponsored by Rosie’s Restaurant. Also, don’t forget we are making coffee and sharing secrets every Saturday morning in the fly shop. If you are new to town, interested in learning to fly fish, or you just like to fish, talk, and drink coffee then come on in to the shop. People usually start showing up at around 9:00 am and feel free to bring a vice, DVD, or any other show and tell.
