This probably isn’t an image you want to pull
up on your iPhone and flash to a potential
date. But, to serious western fly-fishers this is
pure eye-candy. Who couldn’t recall fond days
based on this image, and who couldn’t get
excited when seeing this photo, just as March
arrives and the full spring season rests ahead?
This images says “Stoneflies” and we all
know what that means—big bugs on top, and
rainbows, browns and cutthroats smacking dry
flies on the surface. Wherever you fish in the
West you’ll encounter some kind of stoneflies
this spring. The action starts with Skwalas in
late-February and charges right on through to
the massive salmonfly blitzes of May and June.
And don’t forget about the sneaky and often-
neglected golden stone, which arrives around
salmonfly time and often provides lights-out
fishing when the trout turn off the big orange-
bellied critters.
