One final tip for you in finding a good fly fishing guide: look for one who believes in old fashioned customer service! How to tell? Simple: they’ re often the ones that are the busiest! A service-oriented guide will often take photos of your outing( if you desire) and actually follows up by sending them to you! A guide who doesn’ t give a rip, will troll the same cut plug herring for four hours-- despite your protests( that’ s a true story, a salmon trip on the Chehalis River).
A good guide deeply cares about your experience( and your recommendation) and will notice that your jacket is soaked and offer you an extra one they brought along. If lunch is included in your trip, they care about your food allergies. Forgot your sunblock? They got it. And so on. And, last but not least, some will even offer a form of“ Satisfaction Guaranteed.” This is because they are confident that they can make it a great outing for you and your group.
Back to my guide who sunk his boat, and me along with it, in his defense: he did not charge me for the outing. However, he promised me a free trip sometime in the future--I‘ spose he wanted to set things right. But each time I contacted him, my free trip never came. Needless to say, that outfitter won’ t be getting my recommendation.
