On the final day Justin, Kate, Bobbi and I,
decided to go the backcountry for a 7.5
mile walk fishing for GT’s, Golden Trevally,
and Bonefish. The winds were light and
the fish were everywhere. Small schools of
large bonefish were pushing up from the
deep water to the sand everywhere we
went. We saw some double digit bonefish
that refused our flies and hooked a few
fish pushing 7 pounds. The fish in the back
country were smart and hard to catch.
While fishing to a school of nice bonefish,
we saw two GT’s headed our way. Justin
yells out, “GT’s coming our way!” I quickly
switch rods, get low and begin casting. I lay
a cast out and have it in perfect position
for the incoming GT’s. Right when I strip the
GT rushes my fly, turns in towards us and
attacks the school of bonefish. Justin and
I laughed and joked about needing bigger
flies that represent 5 pound bonefish. By
the end of the day we are all exhausted
from our walk. On our last flat we see some
smaller GT’s cruising our way and get ready
to cast, both Justin and I are standing in
our ready positions. We cast, strip and
immediately double up on GT’s. It was the
perfect ending to a perfect week. I couldn’t
have asked for a better group of guests and
guides, the accommodations were great
and the fishing even better. Good times
with great friends in an amazing place.
It was hard to beat.
