SANDPOINT + PONDERAY
inter has set in up in Northern
Idaho and fishing opportunities
are few and far between. The
Kokanee spawn went much later this
winter than past winters. There were
still fish on reds into early January. A
few brown trout were hanging around
in the Clark Fork River and some
nice ones were caught. Some of the
other local rivers will start fishing well
as temps warm up and ice begins to
break up. Deep nymph rigs are the
best technique this time of year with
streamer fishing picking up a few
months later. The upper Kootenai
River really picks up this time of year
as big fish staging for the spawn are
feasting on kokanee coming through
the dam.
With fishing being slow until spring, now
is the time to get those flies tied! We
are holding free fly tying classes every
Saturday at 9:00. All you need to do is
show up, we have materials, vises, and
tools for use. Beginners are welcome
and the class caters to all levels of fly
tiers. There is always something new
to learn so we hope to see some of
you veterans show up. If you want to
teach a fly for the class please contact
