“Gerard Down was runner-up in the
men’s division and delivered the
competition’s longest cast of 190 feet.”
The Jimmy Green Spey-O-Rama—the
world championship of Spey casting—is
organized by the Golden Gate Angling and
Casting Club and takes place at the club’s
legendary casting ponds in San Francisco,
California. In April, Travis Johnson, who
lives in Oregon, won the overall men’s title
with a four-cast total of 711 feet.
Ireland’s Gerard Downey was runner-up
in the men’s division and delivered the
competition’s longest cast of 190 feet.
British Columbia’s Tim Arsenault finished
in third place. Idaho’s Lee Davison won his
second men’s senior title with a longest
cast of 152 feet, and four-cast total of 580
feet. San Jose, California’s Glen Nagumo
was runner-up. Japan’s Nubuo Nodera
placed third.
The competition is scored on a total of four
casts—a left snake roll, right snake roll,
right single spey, and left single spey. Each
participant has six minutes to complete
their casts, with three attempts at each.
Each competitor’s longest cast in each
category is totaled for an overall score.
Congratulations to Travis, Gerard, Tim,
Lee, Glen, Nubuo, Whitney, Kara and
Donna. And thank you to the Golden Gate
Angling and Casting Club for a wonderful
experience. We are grateful for your
friendships. See you next year.
In its 14th (going on 15th) year SOR
attracted a record 50 competitors,
including participants from Japan, South
Korea, Russia, Canada, the United States,
Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Norway.
Whitney Gould, from Oregon, won her
fourth women’s title in style, setting all-time
records for women’s longest cast (150 feet)
and a four-cast total of 559 feet. British
Columbia’s Kara Knight was runner up
for the third consecutive year. Three-time
winner Donna O’Sullivan placed third.
