I have known many types of people in my studies and travels and have come to recognize that if a person be consumed by a passion greater than materialism, he or she assumes a certain type of bearing. I’ve known people consumed by bull fights, by religion, by family, by poetry, by art—there is something in common, something basal in these types of people—maybe it’s a certain type of talking or thinking, but everything becomes interrelated to whatever has consumed them, and with that, the outside world assumes the shape of their passion. To the writer, a conversation overheard in passing is a passage in a novel, analogously, to the fly fisherman, a certain texture, a certain material is translated into a piece of a bug, a wing, an eye.
