How did the Galilee become the center of Judaism almost 2000 years ago? The day began with a visit to at the ruins of Beit Shearim where the chanichim got a glimpse into life ancient times. They continued to Shvil Hapisgah, a scenic hike around the peak of Har Meron, one of the tallest mountains in Israel. The group discussed how the Jews and pagan (later Christian) communities of this region managed to coexist over centuries. The afternoon brought a visit to the picturesque and mystical city of Tzfat, where they visited synagogues and the artist's colony. They had some time for shopping at the unique Tzfat candle factory. In the evening all of the kvutzot will join together for a bar-b-que. July 10 We are happy to report that our kvutzot are enjoying the additional days in the Galil, and fully taking advantage of this opportunity. What do the kids think of the extra time up north? Leora from Senesh says "I was a little bummed about not getting to Jerusalem but I love Hodayot and I feel so safe." Max from the same group added that visiting Tzfat gave them a chance to see "a whole new kind of culture." Kvutzat Amichai hiked Nahal Snir, one of the sources of the Jordan River, then continued on to Tzipori, the ruins of the major city of the Galil from the 2nd century to the 6th century, CE. Much of the Mishna was compiled and edited there in the 2nd Century CE. 10
