Landscape
The area is rich of contrasts : to the west the land is upper plateau dotted with small mountains and an almost lunar landscape . The now semidesert steppe land is actually teeming with wildlife , hanging out in the deep ravines and mountain ripples that striate the sparse land . This area is actually the northern end of the great Ararat Valley , once covered with forests and tall grass , now barren scrub . Don ’ t be deceived ; the soil is still fertile and springs to life when irrigated by the melting mountain snows , infrequent rainfall and numerous springs that nourish each village . The Ararat valley is the largest and the most fertile land of the forty valleys of the historical Armenian highland .
Cultivated landscape
Ararat valley is considered to be the most fertile zones of Armenia . Agriculture is carried out mainly in the valleys of Armenia ’ s uneven terrain . Fertile volcanic soil allows cultivation of wheat and barley as well as pasturage for sheep , goats , and horses . With the help of irrigation , igs , pomegranates , apricots , and olives also are grown in the limited subtropical Aras River valley .
Products
Orchards mainly produce grapes , apricot and peach . and apple . Other products include pear , apple , melon , watermelon and eggplant . Grains and dry seed are also among the crops of the agricultural activities in Ararat . Famous also for its wine and brandy . The production of alcoholic drinks is among the leading sectors in Ararat valley with a large number of factories spread all over the communities of the province as well as tobacco products .
