Legends of El Salvador

Since ancient times, the legends of El Salvador have fascinated and terrified many people in any of its departments. And they are part of the oral tradition that is transmitted from generation to generation. However, the people who tell them are very few in the present time, so it is necessary for our culture, so we have created this site to make them known and not get lost.

These fantastic beings that appear in Salvadoran legends, sometimes good and sometimes bad, have filled with fear and fantasy both the new generations and those who are now elderly and grandparents. They are also a historical legacy, although they are told in many ways and by different authors. These stories have been told, from houses in the big city to the open fields where the mythology of El Salvador refuses to die.

What is a legend?

A legend is a popular narrative that talks about a real or invented event adorned with fantastic elements of folklore, which is originally transmitted orally from one generation to another.

For this reason, new information is added to some legends, and some are removed. Because they are told many times, it is not the same way in which they are remembered by the people who have heard them.

Who Invented the Legends of El Salvador?

This is a question that many people ask themselves since they want to know the name of the person who invented them. However, we tell you that these stories have no owner since they have been told from generation to generation. Some of these national legends of El Salvador were created in the times of the indigenous people. They often did not find an explanation for the phenomena that occurred around them, so the legends served to explain it.

Others of them were created after the conquest, and they were the Spaniards who brought or invented some stories to achieve some things such as, for example, that people did not go out at night, because there were evil spirits that could "play them and drive them crazy." However, some Salvadoran authors have compiled these legends and have reflected them in books, such as Cuzcatleca Mythology, by Dr. Efrain Melara Méndez; Mythology of Cuscatlán, by Miguel Ángel Espino; among others.
