ost of you probably won't remember back a year and a half ago, when I first started
thinking about publishing NM CliQ Magazine, the original idea was to create a reference
book of Models, Photographers and MUAHs so that if, for example, a photographer had a
need for a specific look in a model it would be relatively easy to simply turn to the "Models"
section and browse until finding one that met the criteria. It would also be far easier to do a
direct comparison of two or more models side-by-side. The same would be true for models
wanting to find a photographer who shot a specific style, or look.
Earlier in July, I happened to have just such a need - I needed six female models in their lateteens, two blonds and four brunettes for my "Petty Little Liars" shoot featured later in this
very issue (see pages 12-17). So I went and grabbed my June issue of NM CliQ Magazine and
began leafing through the "Models" section of Personal Pages...all NINE pages of ads. Not
much of a reference guide was it? However, of the nine models represented, with one being
male, I used four of the models in the shoot, so for the ones who did have pages, the system
worked!
That brings me to the point of this editorial, why are only nine local models advertising in the
magazine? Let's start by stating, it's FREE, so cost is not the objection. The magazine targets
exactly the demographic local models need to be seen by - 4,000 to 5,000 local readers per
month - these are the people who would be hiring them locally. "Don't know how to create an
ad page." - we have designers who will put your page together for you for just $25, and that
is good for three months.
Although they are far better represented than the models, the number of photographers who
take advantage of the free advertising is also very low. There are photographers who have
four, six and even eight page layouts featured in the magazine who don't bother to put in a
Personal Page so that readers who see their work can also know where and how to contact
them.
Whether you are a seasoned pro, a new model, photographer, or just new to the area, maybe
a newly graduated MUAH, or one looking to create a larger client base - if you aren't showing
off what you can do, here, in this magazine, you are missing out on an opportunity that you
will probably not ever find anywhere else. Think about it....then do something about it!
Until next month, COLLABORATE, it makes great art!
