A refresher on the A-B-Cs of the LPP
Well it’s time to go back to basics and remind
everyone how the Legal Protection Plan operates.
During the past several years we have done so
much to enhance the plan, but in doing so, I have
failed to remind you all of the way it operates,
except at the monthly State Delegates meetings.
Unfortunately, in order to efficiently process
claims, there are certain aspects we have to be strict
KEVIN C. about, so deficiencies in claims will be turned
around, and we will not cover the members until all
LYONS
information is properly submitted.
Please follow these easy steps to ensure your coverage and defense:
Enrollment
All NJ State PBA members in good standing are permitted to
enroll in the LPP as a member benefit. In order to be enrolled, you
must be registered by your State Delegate through the internal
computer system. Your Local will receive a bill which is due in 30
days. All members of a Local have an enrollment period of the first
of the month of a certain month. This is the period that the levels
of coverage in terms of dollars exist.

issues for the Local. Please don’t think that members can be
retroactively enrolled in the plan.
Opening a claim
As soon as you realize that you may be eligible for coverage
under the plan, please consult with your State Delegate. If it is
determined that you are eligible for coverage, your State Delegate
will present you with a fully filled out and executed claim form. This
form must contain times and dates. If your delegate presents you
with a form that says “Target of Investigation” we will not confirm
coverage. Also, if you are handed a form that is just signed, please
do not accept it. Recently, there have been several forms that have
been submitted that were obviously filled out by the member or
the attorney. These are also invalid.
These shortcuts are causing a great deal of administrative work
in the office, and we are risk
