20 NEW JERSEY COPS ■ FEBRUARY 2015 A message from State Delegate Jim Toma I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of Local 600 who made this year’s annual renewal and new membership period run so smoothly and quickly. The changes and improvements in the process proved to be very successful and all or nearly all dues and courtesy cards were sent out by the end of January. For those members who have been around a while, you know what a change that is, and that’s due to the hard work of the regular weekly office volunteers along with the volunteers who come in throughout the holiday season and give their time to count cards and stuff envelopes. The process could not have been done without them. Also, the daunting task of entering new members and renewals into the database was done efficiently and quickly with the help of new office staff (Sarah) who worked hard over long hours the last couple of months. Jim Toma The membership numbers are up; the Local continues to grow and become more relevant; we are taking an active role in the political process through our support of the State PBA; and our contribution to the new State PBA PAC is only the beginning of us as retired members sharing in the commitment of all PBA members to be determined to defend our rights and benefits which are under attack by the political machine in this state. We as a group need to continue to support the efforts of our leadership, but just as importantly, we as individuals in our local area must be engaged in the process; this is not the time for complacency. I would like to thank Pat Colligan, Marc Kovar and others on the State Executive Board for opening up the Legal Protection Plan for our retired members who legally carry a firearm. The availability to be part of the LPP has proven to be a great success and hundreds of retired members have already joined. All who have not should go to the website (www.njspba.com/lpp) for more information. Let’s continue to grow as a Local, but more importantly, let’s continue to support all law enforcement members and stay engaged in the process. It’s our pension, COLA and benefits and we cannot depend on others to defend them. Reminder: We’re still all Devils inside Come join us for a night with the New Jersey Devils when they play the Buffalo Sabres on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Prudential Center in Newark.
