DECEMBER 2015
ACTING FOR ZADROGA CONTINUED FROM PAGE 25
House chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce.
And Colligan believes the legislators on Capitol Hill got the message about a very important reason to reauthorize.
“It’s such a small amount of money to guarantee that the next time
a disaster hits, there won’t be any worry by government that our first
responders will respond,” he reasoned.
A boost to reauthorization could come if elected officials in Washington heard the thunderous support coming from Elizabeth where
the leaders stepping up to speak also included New Jersey Congressman Frank Pallone, who is a member of the Energy and Commerce
Committee that is bringing reauthorization forward, Union County
Sheriff Joseph Cryan, NJ State Senator Ray Lesniak and NJ Assemblywoman Annette Quijano.
PBA members at the rally, which included Executive Board Members Bruce Chester, Pat Moran and Mike Freeman, as well as
Bernards Township Local 357 President Raymond Gizienski who was
an NYPD cop working at Ground Zero in the months following the
attack, were particularly impacted by Pallone’s points about the
ongoing need for the Zadroga Act.
“What we’re finding out is, as time goes by, the problems get
worse, not better,” Pallone began. “Some of our Republican colleagues say they want to extend the Act for another five years,
another 10 years. That’s ridiculous. This is something that is going to
be with us for the next 50 or 60 years.”
Senator Menendez elicited a roar from the crowd with his plea for
support.
“(These first responders) stood in line and risked their lives; they
should not have to stand in line even for one minute to get the
proper care they deserv
