Last swim

Special
Olympics
Plunge season kicked off on Nov. 14 as hundreds of brave
souls ventured into the Atlantic at Asbury Park to raise money
for the athletes of Special Olympics New Jersey. The
Thanks4Giving Plunge finally returned to North Jersey for the
first time since 2012.
Thanks4Giving plungers are required to raise at least $100 to
take the Polar Bear Plunge, but are encouraged to raise well
beyond the minimum to receive incentives including
bathrobes, coolers, jackets and more. Many plungers also
exceed the minimum knowing the positive impact it has on
Special Olympics athletes.
At 10 a.m., plungers began to gather and prepare for their icy
1 p.m. dip. Those who preferred to stay warm were also welcomed to come and show support as “plunge watchers.”
The excitement didn’t end after the plunge, as plungers and
spectators alike were encouraged to head to the popular
Wonder Bar for the post-Plunge bash that featured live music
and food and drink specials.
The first of three Plunges supporting Special Olympics New
Jersey athletes, the Thanks4Giving Plunge is one of many
fundraising events hosted by the NJ Law Enforcement Torch
Run for Special Olympics New Jersey. As the largest grassroots
fundraising organization for Special Olympics New Jersey, NJ
Law Enforcement Torch Run raised more than $3 million in
2014. Those funds help provide year-round sports training,
competition, leadership opportunities and health screenings
to more than 25,000 athletes.
