We saw the assassination of Jersey City Detective Melvin Santiago and the untimely death of Waldwick Police Officer Goodell. When we take the oath to protect and serve, we all know and recognize the dangers of our sworn profession. No amount of training could have been can prevent an assassination and a random act that leads to a police officer's demise. Police officers are always at a tactical disadvantage: People know who we are because we carry a shield; we wear a uniform and we operate in marked vehicles with lights on. People know if they are going to be arrested because they are drunk, have warrants on them or are in possession of illegal items. Being a police officer is like no other job in the world, because we must go from being extremely amped up after a pursuit or an arrest to slowing down a situation to perform a proper frisk or a search. When we conduct these frisks or searches on the side of the road or on the streets, take a second to make sure you have the tactical advantage. Here are a few ideas that can help you get home safe. Be systematic: Start from the top and work your way down or start from t
