He feels your pain NJ State PBA tours MedWell to see how Dr. Maz is helping so many law enforcement officers n BY MITCHELL KRUGEL n PHOTOS BY JOHN HULSE NJ State PBA President Pat Colligan and Executive Vice-President Marc Kovar had to see what was going on at MedWell Non Surgical Orthopedic Spine, Knee & Leg Pain Center in Midland Park. They had heard about the many members who had come to this all-purpose medical treatment oasis Dr. Ali Mazandarani, DAAIM, DC, CCRD, CCPCP, – the famed Dr. Maz – has built to get pain relief they couldn’t find elsewhere. “Usually, upon entering this office, they are impressed by seeing other officers in here,” Dr. Maz explains about his growing number of law enforcement patients. “They are coming in here in pain and leaving with relief after the first or second visit.” MedWell provides a desirable option for law enforcement officers dealing with chronic spine, knee and leg pain, mainly from the wear-and-tear of the job and/or suffering injuries. The approach that has proven successful for so many PBA members is non-surgical, orthopedic treatment that is non-invasive and drug-free, and it also has worked very effectively for treatment of multiple chronic conditions, such as sleep difficulty, hormonal imbalance, weight gain, loss of memory, cloudy thinking, lack of energy, fatigue and much more. The emphasis here is on “Well” more than “Med” as in medicine. Dr. Maz has been attracting officers from South Jersey and even Maryland with his drug-free treatments. The fact that officers can get relief without taking any medication is one of the biggest factors that motivates them to come – and come back. “In this day and age when our cops are being treated for drug and alcohol addictions, it’s nice to see somebody like Dr. Maz willing to take a more natural and holistic approach,” President Colligan remarked following his visit to MedWell. “He is dealing with the cause of the pain and trying to get well naturally, rather than just handing out pills.” Even before treatment, Dr Maz has found that his law enforcement patients are impressed by the multiple benefits his facility offers, including being open six days a week with weekday hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and a no-waiting policy for officers. Usually the first visit begins with a visit with one of the medical doctors followed by a series of in house hi-tech, cutting-edge, sophisticated diagnostics and same day, treatment. When Colligan and Kovar visited the MedWell facility that looks like a basic building on the outside but NASA Flight Control combined with the busiest trauma center on the inside, they had one overwhelming reaction. “Oh my God,” President Colligan exclaimed. “What an impressive operation.” MedWell, under the direction of M.T. Shahab, M.D., features doctors and facilities that allow patients to see a medical doctor then move to a chiropractor, physical therapist and even massage therapist. Specialized diagnostic tools do sleep studies, heart testing, X-rays, vascular testing, allergy testing, food-sensitivity testing and brain-health testing, among others, to allow for finding the true cause of a patient’s symptoms, whether they are metabolic, structural, neurological or a combination thereof. MedWell also has a department devoted to handling all the insurance needs that is staffed with more personnel than some dispatch units. “Your departments are giving you health insurance, but most of Dr. Maz explains to NJ State PBA President Pat Colligan and Executive Vice-President Marc Kovar that law enforcement officers come to MedWell Spine, Osteoarthritis & Neuropathy Center because they are experiencing pain relief during their first or second visit. Dr. Maz begins the tour of the MedWell facility by explaining one of the first steps for all patients is to educate them about the causes of their pain and their treatment options. Dr. Maz shows how one of MedWell’s cutting-edge diagnostic tools works. the time you are using it as sickness insurance,” Dr. Maz asserts. “When officers get sick, that’s when they want to do something about it, which takes a lot longer. Most health insurance covers the preventative maintenance to stay healthy.” So Dr. Maz is advising the preventative route, and not just to deal with your pains resulting from the wear-and-tear or the injuries. “You’re not only responsible for yourself, but your family, your job and your community,” he continues. “You have a lot of responsibility, so let’s take care of it.” d www.njcopsmagazine.com ■ JUNE 2016 67
