LEGAL PROTECTION PLAN UPDATE Legal Protection Committee announces changes for the new plan year The LPP Committee has done its annual review of the plan document, and has announced the following changes that were adopted at the April Board of Delegates meeting for claims made after May 1, 2016. 1. Target of Internal Coverage has increased to $1,000 per enrollment period. KEVIN C. 2. Members who have been found to be LYONS untruthful in their application or appeal for coverage may, at the committee’s discretion, forfeit coverage and may be liable for attorney’s fees. 3. A member who switches his/her membership to another labor organization will have coverage terminated at the time he/she becomes a member “not in good standing,” as per the bylaws. 4. Any member who knew of the pendency of charges at the time of his/her initial enrollment will not be eligible for coverage for those charges. 5. Probationary dismissals are still excluded from coverage, but the committee reserves the right to review and approve cases with special circumstances. These changes are meant to better serve the members and streamline administrative decisions. With regards to plan administration, as of Dec. 31, 2015, the plan had opened 9,501 claims since 2002. The plan had $10,519,557 in reserve to pay future claims, and has paid out $23,931,213 in claims since the plan’s inception. The retiree plan has been a great success; currently there are 639 members enrolled for the 2016 year. Also, the new waiver of limits plan has 2,349 members enrolled, which is about 10 percent of our plan membership. For the seventh straight year, the plan will maintain its current fee schedule. This decision is made in spite of the fact that coverage has increased 25 percent over this same time period. The Committee will continue to work to make our plan the best it can be, and keep it the best plan for law enforcement officers. www.njcopsmagazine.com ■ APRIL 2016 21
