46 NEW JERSEY COPS n MARCH 2014 This plunge suits Lyons just fine n BY DONNA WEAVER Although he didn’t wear a Speedo as he set forth in his challenge to PBA members to raise money, NJ State PBA Executive Kevin Lyons didn’t disappoint at this year’s annual Polar Bear Plunge. After attending the Polar Bear Plunge in Wildwood in January also to benefit Special Olympics, Lyons, who is a member of the Special Olympics board that plans plunge events, said he still wanted to do more to further a cause that has become his passion. Lyons challenged PBA Locals and members to donate to the Plunge, and offered to do so wearing a Speedo bathing suit if they helped him raise $7,500. They didn’t hit that mark, but did manage to gather $5,000, which led Lyons to plunge as you see him in the photo. Even though he served as a police officer on Long Beach Island, Lyons is not much for the sand or water. So you can imagine what it took to get him into the frigid Atlantic. “I’m doing this because it’s a great cause and I am stepping up to do as much as I can,” he said. Lyons’ former PBA Local 373 stepped up to meet the challenge when they heard Lyons was going to take the plunge for a noble cause. PBA Local 373 President Brendan Kerlin said he knew that Lyons didn’t like cold water and was surprised when he heard about his challenge to the membership. “There’s no way you would catch me in the water,” Kerlin said. “He is a better man than me. But, of course, Kevin is our former delegate and we had to support him,” Kerlin said. Once Lyons dried off and warmed up after his plunge, he smiled on the Seaside Heights Boardwalk as he showed friends photos of his effort. And he said the experience was truly humbling. “A big thanks to my local for stepping up and donating to this great cause,” he said. d Thinking about making a move? Now may be the time to act.
