Paterson Local 1 memorial on the rise It has been nearly 13 years since members of Paterson Local 1 brainstormed the idea to create a memorial honoring fallen police officers throughout the history of their department. After years of raising funds and overcoming hurdles thrown its way, the Local is set to unveil the Paterson Police Memorial in front of the Public Safety Complex next month. Local 1 has held an annual Bike Run since 2012, which accounts for the bulk of fundraising activities needed to pay for the construction of the $55,000 statue of a police officer mourning the loss of his brothers in blue. “Police officers work day-in and day-out whether on-duty or offduty. We’re constantly running from assignment to assignment trying to do the best job we can,” presented Detective Alex Cruz, President of Local 1. “Sometimes recognition doesn’t come easy and the memorial pays long overdue homage to Paterson’s finest.” Residents and local businesses purchased engraved bricks that will lead to the wall and statue, which the police department hopes will serve as a reminder of their support for future generations. Throughout the department’s history, nine officers have perished in the line of duty including the recent loss of Officer Tyron D. Franklin in 2007 and Sergeant Enrico Venditte in 2001. All nine of the officers will be honored at the memorial site in addition to Detective Michael Morgan of the Newark Police Department after he lost his life in Paterson in an off-duty incident. d Thinking of buying or selling a home?
