The need to know
It is imperative that law enforcement supervisors, managers
and leaders continually expand their knowledge and skills. Selfassessment has always been a challenge, but it is a vital part of
one’s role and responsibility.
In this article, we offer some cornerstone knowledge and skill
areas that are applicable regardless of the size and specifics of
your department.
Please rate your current skill level in each of the following categories as superior, adequate, or in need of improvement. You can
then quantify them singly and as a group of vital knowledge and
skills that may need to be upgraded:
Category
Superior Adequate
Knowledge of your staff (skills, strengths and
where they need improvement)
Knowledge and ability to apply policies and
procedure
Knowledge and skills to minimize and
better-manage liability issues
Ability to positively interact with the media
Ability to positively interact with union representatives
Performance management knowledge and
skills (ability to further develop your staff)
Knowledge of landmark cases and their impact on
law enforcement practices

Once you have completed this qualitative
analysis, you could convert this to a quantitative analysis by
Assigning a “5” for every
Superior, “3” for every
Adequate and “1” for
every Needs Improvement rating. Given
these seven categories,
we believe that an overall score could reflect
your core levels in these
areas, and you could
add other knowledge
and skill areas to help
you assess your
strengths and weaknesses.
By adding your own
knowledge/skill areas
and rating system, you
can create an ongoing
self-assessment tool to
help you improve your
impact and professional
development.
