Union City Local 8 honors its fallen members
The groundbreaking for construction of Union City Police
Department's Memorial Park to honor its six fallen heroes
occurred on Sept. 30. Union City Chief Richard Molinari,
Union City Local 8 State Delegate Chris Scardino and Mayor
Brian P. Stack have been planning the construction of the park
for months. This will be the first police memorial park in Hudson County.
“We contacted the families of the fallen heroes and (they)
are overwhelmed with the thoughtfulness of all involved with
this endeavor,” explained State Delegate Christopher
Scardino. “Their loved ones’ sacrifices will never be forgotten
with this lasting tribute.”
The city park was previously named the Nicholas M.
Guirado Park but the Guirado family agreed to have it
renamed to The Union City Police Memorial Park in honor of
all the six fallen heroes: Lieutenant Charles Harm, Officer John
Sholtz, Sergeant James Knight, Detective Arthur Materka, Sergeant Arthur McKenna and Detective Nicholas Guirado.
Dedication of the park is set to occur during National Police
Week in May of 2016.d
