PRESENTS TRAINING TIPS
Dealing with multiretention holsters
With the advancement of officers’ safety needs, there develops a fine line between creating too many safety features, to the
point where it is often difficult for an officer to access the appropriate force at times when they become necessary. One
example is triple retention holsters.
During an advanced combat training that I attended, the
instructor gave a helpful tip that became one that I used
throughout the remainder of my police career. The instructor
advised that he was issued a triple retention holster and his initial reaction was to complain, as all of us cops do. When complaining got him nowhere, he decided to become good at
defeating the retention mechanisms as quickly as possible. He
elaborated by stating that every day from that point on, when
he donned his uniform, he would stand in front of the mirror
and draw an empty safe weapon 10 times. That’s it! Before he
knew it, he had developed muscle memory, and the task
became un-impeding.
