PRP is blood plasma with concentrated platelets, bioactive
proteins, cytokines, and other growth factors that accelerate the
healing process of bone and soft tissue. The various growth fac-
tors in platelet-rich plasma send signals to the body to initiate
growth and stem-cell repair in the area of injury. PRP helps slow
down or stop the degeneration process, and in many cases, it
will help either regenerate or accelerate the body’s healing.
As recently reported in the New York Times Sports Section:
“Platelet-rich plasma is derived by placing a small amount of
the patient’s blood in a filtration system or centrifuge that ro-
tates at high speed, separating red blood cells from the plate-
lets that release proteins and other particles involved in the
body’s self-healing process. A teaspoon or two of the remain-
ing substance is then injected into the damaged area. The high
concentration of platelets—from 3 to 10 times that of normal
blood—often catalyzes the growth of new soft tissue or bone
cells. Because the substance is injected where blood would
rarely go otherwise, it can deliver the healing instincts of plate-
lets without triggering the clotting response for which platelets
are typically known.”
Most people begin to see signs of improvement through in-
creased function and reduced pain within just four to six weeks.
PRP is used to help repair injured tendons, ligaments, cartilage,
and muscles. The best part of this medical therapy is that the
body is truly healing itself without any surgical measures.
“It’s not just the professional athlete who needs to get back to
their game,” added Mishra. “Everyone wants to get back to what
they do for play or for work.” This therapy would have great
benefit for the amateur competitive student athlete or week-
end warrior who wishes to maintain an active recreational and
healthy lifestyle.
There are numerous conditions that Regenerative Medicine
therapy may help, such as pain in the low back, neck, shoulder
and hip; partial muscle and cartilage tears; diseased interverte-
bral discs; tennis/golfer’s elbow; osteoarthritis; headaches; and
plantar fasciitis. d
