Members of the Monmouth County Conference join Democratic candidate
for Senate Vin Gopal as he knocks on doors in the community.
cers and not politicians, and they don’t see the connection that
goes along with it,” Tardio admits. “I forward those articles to
my members to get them fired up and realize if you don’t come
out and work the phone banks with me, that this is what could
happen to your pension.”
The long haul to the polls
In many ways, the political season isn’t a sprint. It’s a mar-
athon. Long after maxing out the amount of financial support
the PAC permits each county conference to to allot candidates,
the Monmouth County Conference has continued to take ac-
tion in the political process. Gopal knows that all he has to do
is ask, and the PBA will esc ort him through public appearances
and put in hours at the phone banks.
On Election Day 2017, the efforts will only ramp up as mem-
bers will rotate shifts on the phones for two days straight, giving
residents a voice they can trust and stand behind while spread-
ing their impact even further.
“We play an important role,” Tardio states. “I credit Pat and
Marc tremendously. I’ve been taught and motivated by them,
and now it’s my turn to motivate members. It starts at the top.”
The Bergen County Conference stands strong in the chain
of command rousing political action throughout the state. But
among all the phone calls, endorsements and donations made,
Schwartz knows that there’s no better show of strength than PBA
members and their families casting their votes, then gathering
at rallies for candidate rallies across each district on Election
Day, making a statement to legislators that PBA support will be
a big factor in their rise to office.
“The politicians are getting their endorsements and seeing us
go out on the ground for them. This is a big, strong, well-respect-
ed organization – that means something to them.” Schwartz
stresses. “I see a lot of energy. I see a lot of guys who want some
change and are ready for change.” d
