Harrison middle school students honor first responders Amid reflections and remembrance 15 years after the 9/11 Attacks, a Harrison middle school has chosen to celebrate the efforts of first responders as a way of commemorating the tragic event. Sixth-grade students at Washington Middle School pooled their creative energies to design and distribute “survival kits” to local firefighters and law enforcement officers on Sept. 9. Kits contained a variety of candies, each selected to honor first responders in specific ways. “The peppermint patties, for example, represented ‘keeping our cool,’ in intense situations,” says Harrison Local 22 State Delegate Joe Nigro. “It meant a lot that (the students) are actually learning to appreciate everything that’s going on and what we’re doing out there.” In addition to presenting representatives from each department with kits, the students of Mrs. Dunphy’s and Mr. Comprelli’s classes handed boxes of kits for distribution among both departments. “We’d like to thank the students and Mrs. Dunphy and Mr. Comprelli for taking time out of their schedules after school to honor (first responders),” says Nigro. “It was a fantastic effort.” www.njcopsmagazine.com ■ OCTOBER 2016 79
