Torch Run for Special Olympics 2016 Plane

United Airlines donated a 96,000-pound
737 to be pulled almost 100 times by teams
competing for “fastest pull” and “lowest combined weight.” For the landmark 20th
anniversary event, a benchmark $110,000 has
so far been collected for the fundraiser that
helps Special Olympics New Jersey athletes
compete in the summer and winter games
without any cost to them and their families.
PBA winners this year included Team Elmwood Park Local 185 for the fastest pull at 6.27
seconds, beating a high score held by secondplace Bergen County Sheriffs Department
Local 134 at 6.83 seconds.
First timers Team Toms River Local 137
pulled a top score of 6.99 seconds in honor of
Sergeant Tim Sysol, who is currently battling
cancer.
In the lowest combined weight category,
teams competed with any number of people
to pull the plane eight feet in less than two
minutes with the lowest combined weight of
all pullers. Team Monroe Township Local 255
was awarded second overall with five members pulling the plane with a combined
weight of 1,018 pounds.
Other top teams included Team Weehawken Local 15 with five pullers at 1,165
pounds; Team Freehold Local 209 with five
pullers at 1,191 pounds; and Team Toms River
Local 137 with six pullers at 1,199 pounds. d
