On June 15, 2017, Officer Ivan Rivera was at the beach enjoy-
ing the day with his girlfriend and her 6-year-old daughter. The
little girl was suddenly caught in a rip current and swept out
by the ocean. He was able to swim out to the child and keep
her above water while fighting the rip current himself. Officer
Rivera began to experience signs of exhaustion when a nearby
vessel was able to assist in bringing them both to safety. Both
Officer Rivera and the young child were taken to the hospital
and kept for observation. Officer Rivera was able to rely on his
military and DOC training to prevent loss of life. d
