How can drinking water keep me
healthy and injury-free?
Drinking water seems like one of the easiest ways
to keep up with your health, but why is it so import-
ant? The world has about 333 million cubic miles of
water, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and
only about 11 percent is utilized in America for per-
sonal domestic use.
According to data from the National Health and
Nutrition Examination Surveys, the average Ameri-
DR. WILLIAM can drinks a little more than four cups of plain water
per day. The amount of water you should be drinking

is determined by a number of factors, such as your
height, weight, sex, activity level, whether you are
pregnant or breastfeeding and your age.
Here are some ways drinking water can help:
Maintaining the balance of bodily fluids. One of the most basic
reasons for drinking water is to replenish the water that you lose
throughout the day. Your body is composed of 60 percent water,
and the functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorp-
tion, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients and
maintenance of body temperature. When you’re low on fluids, the
brain triggers the body’s thirst mechanism.
Energizing muscles. Cells that don’t maintain their balance of
fluids and electrolytes shrivel, which can result in muscle fatigue.
Drinking water is important when exercising. The American Col-
lege of Sports Medicine recommends that you drink about 17
ounces of water and other fluids about two hours before exercis-
ing. During exercise, drink early and often to replace fluids lost by
sweating. When your muscles tire, you are more prone to injury.
Helping your kidneys. Body fluids transport waste products in
and out of cells. The main toxin in the body is blood urea nitrogen,
a water-soluble waste that is able to pass through the kidneys to
be excreted in the urine. When you’re getting enough fluids, urine
flows freely and is light in color and free of odor. If you are chron-
ically dehydrated, you are more prone to kidney stones.
Keeping you hydrated. Dehydration happens when you lose
more water than you drink. When your body doesn’t have enough
water, it can’t work properly. Dehydration can range from mild to
severe and can lead to muscle cramping, lightheadedness or diz-
ziness.
