Roxbury Township Local 311 rides with student initiative to honor the fallen

The streets outside Eisenhower Middle School were quiet as usu-
al, with school in session on this sunny Wednesday afternoon. All of
that changed at noon when traffic was brought to a halt.
At first, there were three, then five, then 15, until suddenly, Ey-
land Avenue was swarmed with bicycle riders headed to Horseshoe
Lake. This was the Roxbury Township Student Unity Tour, where
young cyclists were on a mission to join the thousands of New Jer-
sey law enforcement officers who ride for those who died each May.
The purpose of the ride was printed on yellow bands strapped to
each of the seventh-and-eighth-grader’s wrists – names of officers
killed in the line of duty.
Sound familiar?
The students of Eisenhower Middle School, located in Succasun-
na, have spent three years using the Police Unity Tour as a frame-
work for curricular growth and campaign awareness in the class-
room.
