caliber and size weapon that you can shoot effectively. Just be-
cause it’s tiny and you can stuff it in your pocket does not mean
that it is the correct sidearm for you.
As far as caliber goes, some agencies have SOP on what you
can and cannot carry in a caliber. I believe that a majority of my
fellow firearms instructors and tactical team members would
agree with me that you do not want use anything smaller than
.380 caliber. I have found that a 9 MM for many of the current
compact and composite weapons is the caliber of choice. I
must also warn you to read and research the weapon you pur-
chase, regarding what caliber round you can safely shoot from
the weapon. Many of the ultralight weight weapons are not rat-
ed for +P rounds or ++P rounds. Failure to know this can result
in the weapon failing and, in extreme cases, essentially blowing
up in your hands.
There are many things to consider on this topic, and I was
fortunate to have learned from some of the best in the world
throughout my career. It is important to continue to practice
and continue to seek learning. Two of the most effective things
you can do are dry firing practice and seeking additional pro-
fessional training from a recognized expert. I hope this article
accomplished what it was intended to do and I look forward to
providing future articles on this topic. d
