Cole is sworn in by Brigantine Mayor Philip J. Guenther as his mother Mi- chele holds the Bible. As his “Officer for the Day” begins, Cole Mulholland arrives at Brigantine Po- lice Headquarters. “He had such a big smile on his face,” Powderly recalls. “He told me that it was the best day of his life and that he had had more fun than he did at Disney World. He asked me if we could keep going for a little while once we were near his house be- cause he didn’t want the day to end. It just broke my heart.” For Cole’s mom, the day was perfect from beginning to end. “That day meant everything to him. It was a dream come true,” she says. “I can never put into words how grateful I am for what they did. I never expected that it would be this huge thing. I can’t believe they came together and did all that for him. I had heard this was a close community before we moved here but for them to do this for a child that they didn’t even know was simply amazing.” d Cole receives a tactical vest from Sam Rando, the officer in charge of the John Sonny Burke K-9 Training Center in Atlantic County, and then goes through K9 training with Rando. www.njcopsmagazine.com ■ JUNE 2017 67
