tracted crowds to pledge their support for Special Olympics athletes. Generating more than $ 200,000 this year, the Torch Run is just one of numerous law enforcement fundraisers that make it possible for all SONJ athletes to participate in the games without cost.
“ It’ s a sense of pride seeing what one group of officers can do for their community, and then see it on the grand scale when we all get together to bring attention to a common cause,” states Meg Hammond, the State Delegate for Raritan Township Local 337, who has participated in the Torch Run for more than 17 years and is a member of the SONJ Law Enforcement Torch Run Committee.
Members of Middlesex County Corrections Local 152 raised $ 9,000 for the 2011 Torch Run.
When the torch reached Leg 10 of the run this year, officers from Upper Saddle River Local 218 made sure that they shared their mission with members of the community. As the 15 Local 218 members carried the flame down West Saddle River Road, they were joined by 265 students who, with a $ 20 donation, were given red SONJ T-shirts and the opportunity to run alongside law enforcement. Through the student donations and funds raised at a March Local 218 Climb with a Cop event, the Local was able to donate $ 18,500 to the 2018 Torch Run.
“ I feel lucky to be in a position where I am able to help families and the athletes of Special Olympics,” stresses Local 218 member Anthony Pulizzano, who is also on the SONJ Law Enforcement Torch Run Committee.“ This means so much to them. That’ s what keeps us going.”
