Verona hosts Hillbilly Strongman competition From left, Officer Robert C. Maguire, Lieutenant David R. Wardrope and Officer Edward Ruff III It’s a widely known fact that cops are pretty strong. They have to keep themselves in shape to do their job to the best of their abilities. So, Verona Local 72 decided to put the commu- nity’s strength to the test. On May 13, the Hillbilly Strongman competition took place in the Verona High School parking lot. The proceeds wel- comed all skill levels, but participants had to be 14 years or older to compete. The reasoning behind calling the competition the “Hillbil- ly” Strongman is that it involved hillbilly-inspired events such as a truck pull, a carry-and-load event, a strongman medley and a mystery event. The competition was a fundraiser to build a fitness center for Verona High School. d www.njcopsmagazine.com ■ JULY 2017 71
