PENSION BENEFITS REPORT
A new beginning for the PFRS Board
On Feb. 1, we experi-
enced a new beginning for
the Police and Fire Retire-
ment System (PFRS). On
this historic day, 12 new
trustees took steward-
ship of the pension fund.
We have seven members
from the various public
PETER
ANDREYEV safety unions, along with
five members represent-
ing management. The NJSPBA has three
of our members on this board, giving us
greater input as to where the fund will
invest our assets and more responsibil-
ity in the day-to-day operations of the
pension system.
In order for us to get to this point, we
as a union traveled a long and bumpy
road that required the hard work of NJ
State PBA President Pat Colligan, Exec-
utive Vice President Marc Kovar and Di-
rector of Government Affairs Rob Nixon.
They had to partner with the other pub-
lic safety unions as well as members of
state and local government to guarantee

that this dream became a reality.
We have to be patient with the new
board, as they will certainly experience
some growing pains and minor delays in
creating the necessary positions for the
PFRS transfer. The good thing is that this
change is for the benefit of all stakehold-
ers in the PFRS, which include our mem-
bers and also employers.
Finally, members will have more input
through our PBA-appointed and elected
representatives. I look forward to work-
ing with them to make sure that our
members are protected and that they re-
ceive the pension for which we all work
so hard.
