Cutting to
the chase
At 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 20, 2016, Detective Captain Grady was on
his way home after a long shift. Still driving through the town in
which he served, a call for a residential burglary came over the air.
Grady heard the report that the man had stolen a knife and was
now chasing residents.
Grady, who was in the area of the incident at Lake and Cellar
avenues, observed people running. He then saw a subject match-
ing the description from the report.
Captain Grady exited his un-
Meritorious Service
marked vehicle and began to follow
Detective Captain
the suspect. A marked unit arrived
Patrick Grady
on scene, and the officer gave ver-
Clark Local 125
bal commands for the suspect to
stop. The assailant then lunged at
the open window of the patrol car, attempting to stab the officer.
Captain Grady yelled to the subject, putting the focus on himself
to ensure the other officer’s safety.
The man then started advancing toward Captain Grady, ig-
noring all commands by the captain to stop and drop the knife.
Instead, he was verbally taunting the captain as he drew closer.
Captain Grady gave the man every chance possible to stop and
drop the knife, but the man continued to advance. Grady fired
one round, striking the man in the abdomen. The man fell to
the ground and released the weapon, removing the threat to the
captain, the motorists in the roadway and the dozens of nearby
residents.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for his
injuries, which were not life-threatening. He was later charged
with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree attempted
aggravated assault and two related weapons offenses. d
