NEW JERSEY COPS
■ AUGUST 2018
Help Wanted!
Well, we have a lot of work to do. According to the Pension Bill signed
on July 3, we have 366 days to get this new system up and running. And
the clock is already ticking. July 4, 2019 is Independence Day for our
great nation, and July 4, 2019 is Independence Day for our Police and
Fire Retirement System (PFRS) pension.
I won’t belabor the points because they have been written here as well
Patrick
as in many other places during the past few years. The fruits of our labor
Colligan are already paying dividends. The latest of the 100 ideas coming from
the “think tank” commissioned in Trenton regarding pensions and ben-
efits have excluded PFRS. That already makes this new system a win-win.
A requirement of the system is that each of the four public safety unions must ap-
point a representative to the new PFRS Trustee Board. Additionally, trustees repre-
senting the two law enforcement and two firefighter unions will be elected. The duties
and responsibilities of this new board are daunting and unlike anything the old board
has had to address. We purposely left much of the governance and design of this sys-
tem up to the new board, and we basically have six years (by legislation) to get it right.
Suddenly “get it right the first time” has a whole new meaning.
I have commissioned a panel to vet those members who might be interested in
serving on the new PFRS Board of Trustees. I invite retired members to submit their
interest as well because there will be a retired member representing both police and
fire on the new board. Some of the members of sub-committees (which will be board
members) are required to have backgrounds in finance or investing.
I have already received some resumes from members who have been following the
legislation and saw the requirements. For those of you who have read Senate Bill 5,
you are already aware of the monumental tasks the new board will have to manage.
Please read the bill to get a sense of the requirements and work ahead for the new
board. So, if you want to be a member of the new PFRS Board, please submit a letter of
interest and resume as soon as possible to:

A special thanks this month to Brothers John Hulse, Andy Pacucci and Pete Andre-
yev, who took the Special Services Trailer to Fort Myers, Florida to honor the memory
of Wayne native Adam Jobbers-Miller of the Fort Myers Police Department, who was
lost in the line of duty on July 28. They drove the 1,300-mile trip straight through both
ways. Strong work and an amazing job representing us to our brothers and sisters in
blue down south.
Enjoy what is left of the summer. Let’s not forget law enforcement Line of Duty
Deaths are up this year. Please STAY SAFE!
