Local 105 for Murphy
State Corrections Local rallies behind PBA-endorsed
candidate for governor
Since the NJ State PBA announced its endorsement of Phil
Murphy for governor in 2016, he has campaigned relentlessly
to reinforce his support of law enforcement officers. Murphy’s
connection to the blue line thickened considerably when the
PBA’s largest Local, State Corrections 105, held an event on
April 10 at Ariana’s Grand in Woodbridge to throw its weight be-
hind the Democratic front-runner for the 2017 gubernatorial
election.
“For nearly eight years too long, Trenton has gone unrespon-
sive to the needs of law enforcement and their families – specifi-
cally state corrections officers,” proclaimed Local 105 President
Brian Renshaw during his endorsement speech. “Our members
have sustained injuries from attacks by the state’s incarcerated
population on a consistent basis. These members do not get
the support they deserve from the current administration. That
changes in November. It is now time to publicly support a can-
didate that will stand up for the needs of law enforcement and
work with our Local to chart a new course for the future.”
This marks the first time that the 7,000-plus members of Lo-
cal 105 have formally endorsed a candidate for governor. With
more than 200 members present, including representations
from all 13 state corrections facilities, as well as statewide units
from Parole and Juvenile Justice, unprecedented support from
law enforcement continues to build for Murphy, who served
as the U.S. Ambassador to Germany from 2009-2013, finance
chairman for the Democratic National Committee under How-
ard Dean, and retired in 2006 after a 23-year career at Goldman
Sachs.
“We are endorsing Phil Murphy for governor because our Lo-
cal knows his vision for New Jersey will benefit working-class
residents,” Renshaw elaborated. “Ambassador Murphy is not
beholden to the political establishment, and he will set an
agenda that reflects our values. We look forward to working
with our next governor on his ambitious agenda to restore jobs,

services and a fully-funded pension system.”
In addition to the Local 105 members on hand, State PBA
President Pat Colligan, Executive Vice-President Marc Kovar
and members of the executive board attended the event. The
vast representation was paramount to Local 105 spreading its
message. After all, “statewide” accurately sums up the Local’s
jurisdiction.
“We go from High Point to Cape May,” noted Local 105 State
Delegate Ray Heck. “Because of the size, a meeting like this al-
lowed for all our stakeholders to go back to their facilities and
let their members know that we met Phil, we listened to him
and we support him.”
Heck reflected that the important thing they learned during
this event was that Murphy is unlike other types of politicians.
And as mayor of Millstone Borough, Heck knows a thing or two
about politicians.
“(Murphy) is very genuine,” he explained. “Every candidate
