Once God’ s judgment comes, it will be unbearable for those who have not chosen to follow Jesus. See note on Mt 8:12. 13:43 the righ teous will shine like the sun An allusion to Da 12:3.
13:44 – 46 These two parables describe the great value of the kingdom of heaven, as well as the extreme and urgent measures people should take because of it.
13:46 he went away and sold everything The point is not that the man purchased a place in the kingdom of heaven, but rather that entering the kingdom is worth giving up everything.
Temple Comparison
Herod the Great’ s expansion of the second temple in Jerusalem, begun around 20 BC, made the temple more than twice the size of Solomon’ s temple, finished in 960 BC. Herod the Great ruled Judea at Jesus’ birth and attempted to kill him( Mt 2:1 – 20). Herod the Great’ s son, Herod Antipas, became tetrarch of Galilee and Perea in 4 BC. He is the Herod involved in John the Baptist’ s execution and Jesus’ trial( Mt 14:1 – 12; Luke 9:7 – 9; 23:6 – 12).
