FORTE BARÃO DO RIO BRANCO BARÃO DO RIO BRANCO FORT
Strategically placed at the top of the Morro do Pico ( Pico Hill ) and Morro da Calhambola ( Calhambola Hill ), in the neighborhood of Jurujuba , the Monte Bastione Historic Park , located at the Barão do Rio Branco Fort , fascinates due to its grandiosity . Consisting of the Praia de Fora ( 1567 ), São Luiz ( 1775 ), Pico ( 1918 ) and Tabaíba ( 1944 ) Forts , it represents one of the cradles of Niterói , serving the Portuguese in protecting the place against the French and Dutch invaders from the 16th to the 18th century . Its resistance through time arouses the curiosity and admiration of visitors about the precious local past .
The most famous of the four forts , São Luiz was designed by brigadier Jean Massé in 1714 and built by Swedish engineer Jacques Funck , by order of the monarchs , between 1769 and 1770 , being opened in 1775 . This unit has been disabled in 1811 and it has it command extinguished , and its garrison was incorporated into the Santa Cruz da Barra Fortress in 1931 . With the diplomatic crisis between the Brazilian Empire and the British Empire in 1863 ( the Christie Question ), only the Praia de Fora Fort and São Luiz Fort underwent remodeling works , but only the first one furnished with artillery .
In 1913 , the Pico Fort began to be built to join firepower with the Duque de Caxias Fort ( also called Vigia or Leme Fort ) in defense of Niterói and Rio de Janeiro . Opened in 1918 , it fired against the protesters of the Copacabana Fort Revolution , in 1922 , and on the Cruiser Tamandaré , in 1955 , in the episode known as “ Novembrada ”, aiming to guarantee the inauguration of President-elect Juscelino Kubitschek . It was the first fortification to integrate the Barão do Rio Branco Fort , by decree of President Getúlio Vargas in 1938 , but it was disabled in 1965 .
Since 1992 , the Barão do Rio Branco Fort housed the 8th Motorized Coast Artillery Group and currently houses , since 2006 , the 21st Field Artillery Group ( 21st GAC ). In 1993 , it was restored , and in 1998 it was reopened to the public .
The current historic park has a total of eleven cultural spaces open to guided visits . Inside , the military engineering of the Middle Ages is admirable , which includes walls , guardhouses , weapons gate , howitzers and storehouses , in addition to four German 280mm cannons , KRUPP C16 , model 1912 , with a maximum range of 12,775 meters ( 41,912.8 feet ). The chapel with the image of Our Lady of Fatima ( brought from Portugal ) and the bust of poet Fernando Pessoa next to a panel in Portuguese tiles with the poem Mar Português ( English : Portuguese Ocean ) are special highlights of the Pico Fort .
Between the Barão do Rio Branco Fort and the Santa Cruz Fortress there is an approximately 40-minute trail which connects the mountain , the forest and the sea , whose tour is currently only allowed by the Army with the monitoring of specialized guides . A wonderful scenario that brings together the fortifications and wild nature .
