Located on a rocky elevation between the beaches of São Domingos and Boa Viagem , the admirable São Domingos do Gragoatá Fort has a beautiful view of the Guanabara Bay from a different angle of the other military buildings in the city , which are located in Jurujuba . It currently houses the Divisional Artillery of the 1 st Army Division ( AD / 1 ) and is not open to public visits .
The building is surrounded by a strong wall , crowned by jagged parapets , from where the military spotted their enemies at sea . The Gragoatá ( Cravatá or Gravatá , popular names for bromeliads ) was the predominant vegetation . Its construction dates back to an artillery battery built around 1696 . For two hundred years , it was alternately garrisoned and abandoned , until during the Christie Question ( a diplomatic stalemate between the Empire of Brazil and the United Kingdom , from 1862 to 1865 ), when it was refitted and refurbished .
The works included opening a powder magazine in the rock , restructuring the barracks , strengthening the walls and creating tunnels for communication between the positions of the cannons during a bombing , as well as building a high battery that complemented the cannons firepower . The inscription on the main gate dates from this period , saying : “ Since Pedro II was a constitutional emperor and perpetual defender of Brazil , this fortification was completed in the 41 st year of the Independence of the Country / 1863 .”
However , once that political crisis was resolved , the place was again disabled until the beginning of the Republic , when it was used to contain monarchist movements . It was at this historic moment that the fort had its most outstanding performance , in the repression of the rebels during the Brazilian Naval Revolt ( 1893-94 ). But it was again disabled in 1916 .
In the 1940s , the Ministry of War allowed the property to host the newly created Museum of the Foundation of the Republic , while in 1943 the City Hall of Niterói promoted works to improve the surroundings . However , none of the projects was completed due to Brazil ’ s entry into the Second World War ( 1939-45 ). In 1952 , the place was the temporary headquarters of the “ Colmeia de Pintores do Brasil ” ( a painting school created by Levino Fanzeres ).
Protected by federal law in 1938 , the fort has walls with battlement merlons , in addition to guardhouses , cannons , an underground gallery with powder magazines and the raised artillery battery – a heritage preserved under lock and key by the Brazilian Army in Niterói .
