PARQUE MUNICIPAL PALMIR SILVA – HORTO DO BARRETO PALMIR SILVA MUNICIPAL PARK – BARRETO GARDEN
Com uma tranquila área de lazer cercada por rica vegetação , o bucólico Parque Municipal Palmir Silva – ou Horto do Barreto – é a principal opção de entretenimento do bairro que lhe apelida . Sinônimo de saúde e qualidade de vida devido ao ar puro e às práticas recreativas nele realizadas , constitui-se num grande atrativo turístico e cultural da Zona Norte de Niterói .
Com um total de 34 mil metros quadrados , seus limites foram inicialmente demarcados no século XIX em torno do hospital local , com o objetivo de isolar os pacientes em tratamento de doenças contagiosas . No decorrer do tempo e com a evolução da medicina , o isolamento rigoroso deixou de ser um procedimento necessário e o bosque passou a servir à comunidade para passeios , piqueniques e apreciação da natureza .
O Horto do Barreto foi delimitado e aberto ao público em 1950 , ganhando em 1978 o nome de Parque Municipal Monteiro Lobato . O autor de O Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo atualmente empresta seu nome à biblioteca municipal que ali funciona desde 2014 , com ambiente climatizado e acervo bem conservado . O escritor também está representado por um busto de bronze , doado pela Diretoria da antiga fábrica de refrigerantes que funcionou no terreno ao lado até meados da década de 1980 . Em 1998 , tornou-se oficialmente Parque Palmir Silva , homenageando o procurador federal que foi vereador , deputado estadual , vice-prefeito e secretário de governo , falecido no mesmo ano .
Com programações culturais , oficinas artísticas , práticas desportivas e feiras de artesanatos aos sábados e domingos , que dobram a frequência de público em comparação aos demais dias da semana , o lugar possui parquinho infantil , instrumentos de ginástica e uma lona cultural inaugurada em 2019 e batizada com o nome do falecido contrabaixista niteroiense Arthur Maia . Ali dentro ainda funciona um posto do Centro de Controle de Zoonoses para vacinação de animais domésticos .
Enriquecendo a área verde do horto – composta de jambo branco , jenipapo , ingá e jamelão , dentre outras espécies – está o Jardim Japonês , instalado em 2018 . Primeiro do tipo na cidade , ele fica em um terreno de cinco mil metros quadrados com plantas orientais , espaço para meditação , lago com peixes ornamentais , cascata , ponte elevada e lanternas nipônicas .
Outro monumento presente é a Estátua do Trabalhador Brasileiro , encomendada pelo presidente Gaspar Dutra ao escultor Celso Antonio em homenagem às classes trabalhadoras . Produzida em 1950 , foi hospedada em outros endereços até ser trazida para o Horto do Barreto em 1983 . Nada mais apropriado para o bairro que foi o principal polo industrial do estado durante boa parte do século XX , com fábricas de tecidos , sabão , fósforos , formicidas , ladrilhos e olarias . Democrático e delicioso , o Parque Municipal Palmir Silva representa um passeio completo , com atrativos naturais e culturais .
With a quiet leisure area surrounded by rich vegetation , the bucolic Palmir Silva Municipal Park – also known as the Horto do Barreto ( Barreto Garden ) – is the main option for entertainment in the neighborhood where it is located . A synonym of health and quality of life due to its fresh air and the recreational activities that take place there , it is a great tourist and cultural attraction in the Northern Zone of Niterói .
With a total of 34,000 square meters ( around 8,5 acres ), its boundaries were first delimited in the 19th century , around the local hospital , with the purpose of isolating patients being treated for contagious diseases . Over time , with the progress of medicine , the strict isolation stopped being a necessary procedure and the grove started to be used by locals for walks , picnics and nature appreciation .
Horto do Barreto was delimited and opened to the public in 1950 , being named Monteiro Lobato Municipal Park in 1978 . The author of “ Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo ” currently lends his name to the municipal library that has been there since 2014 , which has a climatized environment and a well-maintained archive . The writer is also represented by a bronze bust , donated by the Board of Directors from the former soda factory that functioned nearby until the mid-1980s . In 1998 , it officially became known as Palmir Silva Park , in honor of the federal prosecutor who passed away in the same year , and who had also worked as City Councilor , State Congressman , Deputy Mayor and Secretary of the Government .
With cultural events , art workshops , sports practices and craft fairs on Saturdays and Sundays , which double the number of visitors in comparison to weekdays , the place has a children ’ s playground , fitness equipment and a tent theatre opened in 2019 and named in honor of deceased bass player from Niterói , Arthur Maia . A station of the Zoonoses Control Center for vaccination of domestic animals still works on the inside .
Enriching the green area of the garden – composed of jambo branco , jenipapo , ingá and jamelão , among other species – is the Jardim Japonês ( Japanese Garden ), established in 2018 . First of its kind in the city , it is located in an area with 5,000 square meters ( 1,2 acres ), with oriental plants , a space for meditation , a lake with ornamental fish , a waterfall , an elevated bridge and Japanese lanterns .
Another monument in the park is the “ Brazilian Worker Statue ”, commissioned by President Gaspar Dutra and assigned to sculptor Celso Antonio in homage to the working classes . Made in 1950 , it was hosted at other places until it was brought to Horto do Barreto in 1983 . Nothing more appropriate to the neighborhood which was the main industrial center of the state for much of the 20th century , with textile , soap , matches , insecticides , tiles and pottery factories .
